2017, 60” x 72” (152.4 x 182.88 cm), acrylic and metal patchwork on canvas

Gabriela Gil worked on this piece after a tremendously impactful trip to Honduras, where she discovered Chachahuate, a Garifuna community of about 100 people living in an island, and surviving off of fish and tourism. The Afro-indigenous population lives precariously and lack some of the most basic needs such as clean water and electricity. However, it truly touched her to see how kind-hearted, generous, and genuinely happy they are despite all of this.
