De Adentro (From Inside) - Framed

-

2019-2020, irregular 36” x 36” (91.44 x 91.44 cm), dyed linen, acrylic, charcoal, and mica on birch panel

This piece sits between the realm of painting and sculpture. A slow-developing piece, it was heavily influenced by the social interactions and observations Gabriela Gil had during a research trip to Cuzco, Peru at the end of 2018. Gil had previously experimented using painting as an object, and incorporating 3D objects in the surface, however, this was the first time she sculpted a previously painted fabric to form the piece.

References that come to mind: Peru, poverty and artisanship in Latin America, natural dyes, the sun's rays, mountains, rawness
